What is a Healthy Heart Check?
Healthy Heart Assessment
- The Healthy Heart Check is a Medicare initiative which encourage Australian 30 years or older, who have not had a heart attack or stroke but is at risk of developing these disease, to attend for a comprehensive healthcare review with your GP.
How much does it cost?
It is Bulk-Billed - No Out of Pocket Cost
- People at risk of heart disease will be eligible for a heart check-up, available free (no out of pocket cost) as it is bulk-billed from our GP practices at mount Kuring-Gai.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, but you can prevent many heart attacks and strokes with a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, a healthy weight, and a smoke-free lifestyle.

- 1.4 million Australians have a high chance of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years. Many are unaware of this risk.
- A 20-minute Heart Health Check with your GP will help you understand your risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years.
- Your GP and nurse can support you to make positive changes to lower this risk.
How Often Should I Get a Healthy Heart Check?
It is an annual check up designed to:
- Help you to understand your risk factors for heart disease,
- Estimate the chance of a major heart or vascular event in the next five years
- Working on manage your risk factors to improve your heart health and general wellbeing
What to expect during the consultation?
- During your consultation, your GP will assess your risk factors for heart disease through blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and discuss your diet, physical activity, smoking, diabetes, and relevant personal and family health history.
- With this information, your risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next five years will be classified as low, medium, or high.
- In a follow-up visit, your GP will review these risk factors and propose a management plan. This might involve maintaining your current lifestyle with a yearly review or receiving targeted advice to reduce your risk. Topics may include diet, exercise, smoking or alcohol habits, sleep, and work-life balance.
- For higher risk situations, your GP may recommend medications or additional tests to improve your cardiovascular health.
